My Favorite Geological Formation: “Chinle III”
Although not exactly in Flagstaff, the colorful striations of the Chinle Formation can be seen in many places in Northern Arizona, among them on the way to Page and in Petrified Forest National Monument. These striations have always fascinated me. Being so well-defined, they inspire my imagination to try to envision the ancient eras in which they were formed. They also inspire my admiration of the beauty of their colors and their soft eroded forms. I have tried several times to paint them. The Chinle is my favorite formation.
